Abdul Sattar Edhi: A National Hero
Introduction
Abdul Sattar Edhi was a Pakistani humanitarian who was also the founder of Edhi Foundation with the world's largest network of ambulances.
He rescued over 20,000 abandoned infants, sheltered over 50,000 orphans and trained over 40,000 nurses.
Edhi Foundation
Edhi foundation is the world's largest social welfare organisation with almost six thousand volunteers. The foundation provides many services like shelter, medical care and drug rehabilitation services. Besides Pakistan it has an extensive network in countries like US, UK, UAE, India, Nepal, Canada, Japan and Bangladesh. It has also provided support to countries in Europe, Africa and Middle East in the cases of natural disasters.
Bilquis Edhi
Bilquis Edhi was the spouse of Abdul Sattar Edhi. She was a Pakistani nurse who saved the lives of over 16000 children. She was a social worker and an active philanthropist. Bilquis Edhi was also the head of Bilquis Edhi Foundation apart from Edhi Foundation. The government awarded her Halal-e-Imtiaz.
Awards of Abdul Sattar Edhi
He received the Lenin peace prize in 1988, Bacha Khan peace award in 1990, Nishan-e-Imtiaz in 1989, Wolf of Bhogio peace award in 2005 and Ahmadiyya Muslim peace prize in 2010 for his great services. He was given the title of "The Richest Poor Man".
He is truly a national hero. He will always live on in our hearts.
